Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 packet active dry yeast (2 1/4 tsp)
  • 1/2 cup warm whole milk
  • 1/2 cup warm water
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter (softened)
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 tbsp red food coloring
  • For the filling: 1/2 cup unsalted butter (softened), 1 cup brown sugar, 2 tbsp ground cinnamon
  • For the frosting: 8 oz cream cheese (softened), 1/4 cup unsalted butter (softened), 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar

Instructions

  1. Combine warm milk and water in a bowl; sprinkle yeast and let sit until foamy (5 minutes).
  2. In another bowl, mix flour, sugar, cocoa powder, and salt; add eggs, melted butter, food coloring, and vanilla to the yeast mixture.
  3. Gradually incorporate the flour mixture until a dough forms; knead on floured surface for about 5–7 minutes until smooth.
  4. Place kneaded dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place until doubled in size (about an hour).
  5. Meanwhile, mix softened butter, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt for the filling.
  6. Once risen, roll out dough into a rectangle; spread filling evenly over it.
  7. Roll tightly into a log and cut into approximately 12 equal pieces.
  8. Place rolls in a greased baking dish; cover and let rise again for about 30 minutes.
  9. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for around 25 minutes or until golden brown.
  10. Prepare frosting by beating cream cheese and butter together before adding powdered sugar; mix well.
  11. Once rolls cool slightly, frost generously before serving.
